Time to learn a new skill – or two

by Russell on March 6, 2013

Had a great night out. Attended my very first Toastmasters meeting and jumped in boots and all with a two-minute impromptu speech. Figured hey, that’s what I was there to do so no point in hiding in the crowd. And yes, I was great, according to the supportive members. Go me.

In the not to distant future I see myself involved in a lot of public speaking. To that end I decided it was time to improve an hone the few speaking skills I have sooner than later. Might as well be prepared for the time that day arrives.

Talking of new skills, I am thoroughly excited about the cheese making course I’ll be attending this Saturday. The class will be learning to make Feta cheese and will also enjoy a demonstration of yoghurt and mozzarella cheese production. I already make my own bread, jam, plum champagne and plum brandy; the idea of making my own cheese and yoghurt is positively intoxicating. Imagine all those different yeasts in the same room – what could possibly go wrong.

Russell, you always seem to pop into our life in the most serindipitous times.

I’ve been a toastmaster member since 2006. It’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done for my self-confidence and of course speaking ability. I’ve been wondering whether or not to renew my dues this year since I haven’t been to a meeting in a while. But your post just reminded me of the value of being a TM and I will definitely renew.

Maybe some day you and I can get together and share our speeches!

Have fun, you’re gonna love it. Hope to see you in the magazine!
